MERCED, Calif. (KFSN) — Merced College is taking steps to make a college education accessible to everyone. The RELAUNCH program gives students the opportunity to complete their associate degree in just 17 months.

Giuseppe Caccia knows firsthand the challenges of balancing studies and work.

“I still work full time, actually, at the cemetery,” Caccia said.

When the Merced College student started working towards his degree, he said the demands of both were just too high.

“It was really hard trying to balance, so I ended up falling,” Caccia explained. “Can’t finish it.”

Now, thanks to Merced College’s new online degrees, he has a second chance.

“The opportunities got super widened and it was one of those things where it was a no-brainer,” Caccia explained. “Now I follow all the courses, all the certificates and diplomas launched with the program.”

“We’re targeting someone who’s already in the workforce,” said Joanna Grimes, director of educational special projects at Merced College. “We want you to take this step and jump-start your education and your future, for you and your family. The beauty of it all is that it’s all online and it’s asynchronous, which means they can connect to anything moment.”

The accelerated program gives students the opportunity to complete their associate degree in just 17 months.

“The idea is to design the program so that they can learn quickly and graduate,” said computer science professor Bhrigu Celly.

Tuition is free for new students, giving people like Giuseppe the chance to jump-start their careers

“With this, the possibilities are endless,” Caccia said. “It’s suitable for all age groups. I’m 30 and it wasn’t too late to get started.”
