Penn State Learning Announces Fall Tutoring Schedule

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State Learning, the multi-subject learning and writing center on the University Park campus, will provide a range of in-person and remote peer tutoring services to University Park undergraduate students during the Fall 2022 semester. The labs will open for tutoring and the full study group program will begin on the evening of Sunday, August 28.

Also on August 28 and September 11 at 6:00 p.m., new and returning students can take a one-hour guided tour of the Penn State Learning Labs from 220 Boucke Building. Tour guides will provide information on available academic support programs and resources.

Math Tutoring

Peer tutors for Math 004 through Math 141 will be available for in-person tutoring at 7 Sparks Building on Sunday evenings, 6-10 p.m., and weekdays, 10 a.m.-10 p.m. (except Fridays, when laboratories will close at 3 p.m.). For Math 220 through Math 252, tutors are available Sunday through Thursday evenings, 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at 7A Sparks.

Math peer tutors are available for online appointments most weeknights. Students can register for appointments through Starfish.

Pre-calculus review material is also available for students taking Math 110 and 140. See Penn State Learning’s math page.

writing lessons

Peer writing tutors will be available for in-person tutoring through The Writing Center @ Penn State Learning. Students can sign up for an appointment through Starfish (available during the days and times below) or show up during these same times and meet with a tutor if one is available.

220 Boucke and the Search Bar (Pattee Library)

  • Sun., 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Mon. to Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Fri, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Students can also register for synchronous appointments online through Starfish.

The Writing Center @ Penn State Learning also offers asynchronous writing tutoring. With this option, students submit a detailed form with their essay and then receive feedback from tutors within three days of submission. This option is ideal for students who are looking for feedback on shorter writing assignments or for whom asynchronous tutoring is simply more convenient. Students can request online asynchronous writing tutoring using this form.

Writing teachers are encouraged to request class visits or workshops from writing tutors.

World language tutoring

Peer language tutors in Spanish, Italian, French, Korean, Japanese and Russian are available to provide assistance in elementary and intermediate language lessons. Spanish tutors are available for private lessons at 220 Boucke and for online exam reviews throughout the semester. All other language teachers are available by appointment at 220 Boucke and online. Students can view the schedule and tutorial schedule through Starfish.

Workshop “Study smarter”

A two-hour College Transition Workshop “Exploring Smarter Metacognitive Strategies” will be offered on 11 dates throughout the fall beginning in early September (specific dates to be announced). The workshop, which is offered remotely and in-person, provides an introduction to college-level learning and will be led by peer tutors who have successfully navigated the transition themselves. Find the links to register and participate on the Penn State Learning website.

Guided study groups

Students can participate in guided study groups where peer tutors review material from a wide range of courses and help students hone their problem-solving skills in a stimulating and engaging collaborative learning environment. Group leaders attend classes and work with course instructors to provide review materials that help students prepare for quizzes and exams. Study group sessions will be fully staffed by the week of August 28. Find more information on Penn State’s Learning Guided Study Groups page.
